Tip of the month for December 2008
December in Germany is known as the month of “Gemütlichkeit” (coziness). People savor the special atmosphere at this time of the year when lights are decorated in every window and a smell of Christmas cookies blows through the streets.
For this special month we present 3 different ideas to show you the variety of possibilities Germany has to offer to its visitors in the contemplative Christmas time.

Christmas Market in Rothenburg
Germany is well known for its numerous lovely Christmas markets all over the country. The wonderful tradition of strolling around on one of these beautiful markets in festive setting is the best way to enjoy and prepare for the comfy Christmas time. This year we present you a real jewel: the Christmas Market in Rothenburg. Located in the South of Germany, this picturesque town is the perfect location for an unforgettable Christmas experience. Embedded between the town hall and the Gothic church, you can relish typical Christmas food like fritters with powdered sugar, roasted almonds or other Franconian specialties. To warm up, have a cup of mulled wine with amaretto or delicious eggnog. And if you have a real passion for Christmas, check out the German Christmas Musuem, operated by Kaethe Wohlfahrt. It is open throughout the year. Kaethe Wohlfahrt is an international chain of year-round Christmas shops whose flagship “Christmas Village” Store is located just off Rothenburg’s market square.
Winter fun in Bavaria
For all those who are more into sports and who want to escape from the pre-Christmas hype in the city, we recommend to visit the nature. The area around Oberstdorf, located in the vacation region “Allgäu” in the State of Bavaria, does not only invite visitors to relax in the magnificent Bavarian Alps but also to enjoy winter sports. Once there, don’t miss the start of the Four Hills Tournament between December 28 and 30 which is one of the most traditional ski jumping events and takes place every year. The event and side spectacle attract thousands of visitors and it is a lot of fun for everyone. If you prefer to be active, you can cruise down the slopes or enjoy other sports like snow-boarding, coasting, halfpipe and cross country skiing. For those who like it a bit more easy-going, enjoy a ride in a horse-drawn carriage on cleared winter roads with beautiful winter panoramic views.
