How do you get an elephant, an eagle, the Virgin Mary, a pipe organ, an angel, a font and perhaps also some elves and legendary creatures all in one place? It’s quite simple, just go down 70 metres below ground and let your imagination run riot in Maximiliansgrotte Cave. Over thousands and thousands of years, the forces of nature have created a network of caves containing countless fascinating stalactites and stalagmites.

A tour of part of the cave, which is more than a kilometre long in total, takes about half an hour and there are lots of strange limestone formations to see, including the “Iceberg”, the largest stalagmite in Germany.
Special lighting was installed in the cave in 1994 which lights the way but does not encourage unwanted plants to grow.

Many things have happened during the 400 years or since Maximiliansgrotte was discovered, and expert tour guides will tell you all about them. The cave is open every day except Monday until the end of October.
