Roman baths, medieval monasteries, Gothic cathedrals, baroque palaces, art nouveau villas, late 19th / early 20th century industrial buildings and the early Modernist masterpieces of the Bauhaus movement. Scarcely any other country possesses such a profusion of unparalleled architecture of such mesmerising beauty as Germany. UNESCO has preserved many of these buildings for future generations by designating them world heritage sites.
2009: Bauhaus Anniversary Celebrations in Thuringia
Thuringia Celebrates Modern Architecture with Major Exhibitions in 2009To mark the 90th anniversary of the Bauhaus, the cities and regions of Weimar, Jena and Erfurt will host multiple celebrations in 2009.
An impressive series of exhibitions and outstanding events will commemorate this world famous school of the avantgarde. Great names and masters of the Bauhaus are to be honoured such as Gropius, Feininger, Itten, Klee, Kandinsky and van de Velde.
The focus of Weimar’s events will be on the exhibition ‘Bauhaus – Classics; the Staatliches Bauhaus 1919-25 and its relationship to historic Weimar’ (Apr 1 – Jul 5, 09). Further exhibitions will take place at the Bauhaus Museum, the Neue Museum Weimar, the House am Horn, the Schiller Museum and the Goethe National Museum in Weimar.
The city of Jena has always been an important platform to present art and architectural concepts. A guided city tour ‘From the Jena Art Association to the Contemporary Arts Scene’ can be booked and two exhibitions will showcase the activities of the avantgarde (‘Bauhaus in Jena’ – Mar 22 – Jun 7, 09) as well as Kandinsky’s work (Sep 6 – Dec 19, 09).
The Kunsthaus Avantgarde in Apolda will show three exhibitions: ‘Oskar Schlemmer’s Weimar and Dessau years’ (Jan 11 – Mar 21, 09), followed by ‘Bauhaus Master László Moholy-Nagy’ (Apr 5 – Jun 21, 09) and ‘Feininger’s work’ (Sep 12 – Dec 19, 09).
Thuringias Capital Erfurt was also a preferred address for artists. The Kunsthalle Erfurt will present the exhibition ‘Controversy about the Bauhaus’ from Mar 29 – May 24, 09.
