Martin Luther is without doubt one of the most important individuals in German history. Fittingly, in 1821, he became the first commoner to have a public statue dedicated to him. It stands on the market square in Wittenberg, the town where Luther spent most of his life. No other church reformer had such a far-reaching influence on later generations as the former Augustinian monk.
